Desiree's Story

Desiree, a student at Sacramento State University, is majoring in Social Work with a minor in Deaf Studies—a path inspired by her passion for helping others.

Her journey has been anything but easy. “I grew up with my mom, who was a single parent and disabled, raising five of us. After my oldest brother was sentenced to 10 years in prison, we had no support. My brothers and I eventually ended up in foster care, all separated. I moved out at 17 and have been on my own since.”

College came with new challenges: housing instability, food insecurity, and loneliness. “In my first year, I became homeless and lacked a sense of community,” she says. That changed when she connected with Fostering Success and Significance (FSS).

“Steffanie made me feel seen and genuinely welcomed into the program. I'm so grateful for her guidance,” Desiree says. Through FSS, she found support in mentorship, workshops, and a strong community.

One of her biggest influences has been her mentor, Jill. “She checks in, remembers when I have tests, and is always honest with me. Her support has changed my life.”

Desiree also works for FSS, helping coordinate resources and support for fellow students. “What I love most about my job is the community. I’m surrounded by kind, driven people who care about making a difference.”

She’s learned practical skills—how to manage money, build a resume, and prepare for her future. “FSS has helped me build confidence and direction. I’m soaking in as much as I can and continuing to grow.”

Her biggest goal? Stability. “I want a home, a family, and a career where I can help people every day.”

Her advice to other students:
“Don’t give up. It’s okay to take fewer classes. College isn’t a race. You’ve already shown so much strength—keep going.”

We’re proud to have Desiree in the FSS family. Her resilience, heart, and leadership inspire us all.
